What impression do the show creators want you to make of the new arrivals?

It is clear that the show creators want to make the new arrivals seem bold and powerful, they want to show that they are superior of others around them. When they arrive it was clear that they chose to ‘over do it’ to ensure that the characters create a big and obvious impact when they enter the scene.

What does this advert do to achieve it?

To begin with, all is calm and quite in the pub of Coronation Street. However, this then deeply contrasts as loud and demanding music begins to play as the arrival of the new characters enter the scene. They clearly make a powerful impact straight away, as things begin to strangely go wrong… worried facial expressions of the characters in the pub and the drink machine that explodes due to lack of concentration and nervousness… The camera then cuts to a close up on a lady’s black high heel. The heel alone already portrays that this particular character is of a high class, very sophisticated and well dressed. Following the clip of the heel we get a close up of a male, which also appears to be dressed in a smart suit. In total there are one male and two females, all of which are well groomed and (the females) in heavy makeup. Slow motion in used in this section to give the feeling of the characters being similar to heroes... Or more likely super villains due to their dark clothing- symbolising evil. As one of the females walk past she seems superior to the other females who nervously pass her- this is shown through a high angled shot. Special effects are used when the streetlight explodes to signal the strong vibes that these new arrivals have let off. Towards the end, they each enter the pub. They arrive standing tall and strong, positioned well. A low angled shot is used to show their body language, it suggests they are bold and confident characters, here to make an impression- and they certainly did.

The writer of this trailer is very clever and he shows the confrontation between Jacqui and Niall however they leave the audience wondering how the story is going to end therefore encourages the viewer to watch the show. The black and white effect emphasises the seriousness of the situation and highlights that there is going to be a dramatic story line. The costumes’ of the characters are messy and old which indicates that ‘kidnap’ may have taken place or lost for a while but this mystery created by the writer encourages the viewer to find out more. The dialogue used by the characters is said in a bitter one which shows there is rivalry between characters which could result in conflict in the show.

This trailer is very clever because the main part of the advert suggests that the day will be very lucky and run smoothly however at the end it turns by advertising it on Friday the 13th which is notoriously unlucky which therefore indicates that the day will be unlucky and go wrong. The advert shows the happiness and excitement from the bride but then go to the concerned faces from the other characters which shows they have worries about the wedding, this contrast is shown with the costumes of the characters as the bride is wearing pink which shows happiness and joy however the other characters are wearing black which represented gloom and sadness. The focus on the bride gives the suggestion that something may go wrong for the bride but overall this unpredictable wedding leaves the viewer left wondering what is going to happen

EASTENDERS

This trailer is very dramatic and advertises a very serious storyline which is shown, firstly by the music, the non- diegetic sound is upbeat and loud which creates tension and excitement to the viewer but then cleverly turn into the EastEnders theme tune which enforces which programme the advert is advertising. The dialogue of screaming voices shows a dangerous situation in the square and the screaming off ‘Stacy’ and the clip of Stacy trapped in a burning building leaves the viewer left wondering what happens to Stacy and any other characters trapped in the building, this question left in the viewer’s mind encourages them to watch the show. The trailer goes to shock faces on the characters which shows a shocking storyline and danger to the characters however this advert leaves the viewer left wondering what are the results of this dramatic storyline and therefore are more likely to watch the show.
