How do soaps differ from other genres?
One related genre is the melodrama, where it combines features such as moral polarization, strong emotions, unlikely coincidences, and excess.
Another genre is the literary romance, where it shares features such as simplified characters, female orientation and episodic narrative.
However, soaps do not usually have the happy endings or the idealized characters- e.g. it is based on reality
